Dr Fred Bye
I have been very blessed to have had three distinct opportunities to grow, learn and help others during my dental career.
I was awarded an Air Force dental professional scholarship prior to entering dental school. Accordingly, my first dental career began immediately upon completion of my periodontal specialty training program with my assignment as Chief of Periodontics at Shaw AFB Regional Hospital in South Carolina. During this time, I completed Air Command and Staff College, became board certified, advanced to the rank of major and had the opportunity to provide care for both active duty and retired members of the Air Force. My time in the Air Force gave me a very special and forever lasting appreciation and respect for all members of the United States military.
I then transitioned to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry for my second dental career as a professor in the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. I enjoyed both lecturing and clinically instructing students training to become dentists, dental hygienists, and post graduate students in various dental specialties. I was fortunate to receive the Teacher of the Year award while also being involved in numerous research projects and the publication of related dental articles. The University of Michigan sponsored my travel to lecture to dentists at the local, state, national and international levels. After the completion of my implant training at the world renowned Branemark Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, I became director of the Dental Implant Training Program and placed both the first bone allograft and first dental implants for patients within the Department of Periodontics.
Having had the opportunity to enjoy the responsibilities and rewards of being a periodontis/implantologist in both an Air Force and a university setting, I learned that my heart lied in the direct provision of care for patients. My greatest satisfaction always came from helping people in need.
In 1992, I followed my heart and my passion for helping people with my third dental career in the founding of the The Bye Center for Implants and Periodontics in Hagerstown, Maryland. When someone asks me: what do you do?, my response is: I change the quality of peoples lives. This is the greatest satisfaction any health care provider can ever have.
I am surrounded by a team of compassionate and talented professionals at The Bye Center. In addition to the provision of direct patient care of the very highest quality, our team has given me the opportunity to continue to pursue my other professional interests as past President of the Washington County Dental Society, director of an active dental implant study club for dentists in the tri-state area, director of The Bye Center for Continuing Education including programs for dentists in isolated areas of Alaska, and involvement with Dentistry From The Heart Day for patients with special needs in our local area.
God has guided me throughout my dental career. God has especially blessed me with three beautiful children who share my gratitude and passion for the wonderful life and love we share.
